The Amritsar rural police have arrested a man, identified as Jasdeep Singh, a resident of Chheharta, for allegedly killing his sister for “honour”.

The victim, identified as Gurinder Kaur, alias, Ritu, also a resident of Chheharta, had left home at around 7pm on May 16 to get her mobile phone repaired, but went missing thereafter.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP, rural) Jasdeep Singh said her family, who had been looking for her, found her body at a bridge at Khiala Kalan village on May 18, with strangulation marks on her neck.

“The victim, whose father and two brothers live in Germany, was putting up with her mother and another brother, the accused, at Chheharta,” he said.

He added that Balbir Kaur, the mother of the victim, had alleged that a few people, against whom her daughter had got an attempt to murder case registered under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Chheharta police station were behind her daughter’s killing.

The SSP added that when Ritu returned home on May 16 and started chatting over phone, Jasdeep strangulated her with a scarf, put her body in his car and dumped it in a channel at Khiala Kalan village.

He maintained that there were several cases of quarrel against the accused at various police stations in Amritsar.
“Further investigations are being held into the matter,” he said.
