Panic gripped Umrewal village of Nakodar sub-division on Sunday when a group of men armed with firearms and sharp-edged weapons barged into a house and grievously injured some members of the family and outraged the modesty of others.
The complainant, Mohindar Kaur (70), said that the accused led by Samund Singh, who claims to be close to Shahkot MLA Ajit Singh Kohar and a resident of Kaimwala village, first attacked her daughter-in-law Surindar Kaur with iron roads, leaving her seriously injured.
The accused also outraged the modesty of her granddaughters, Kaur alleged.
She said that gangsters then attacked her son Jaswindar Singh, seriously injuring him. She said the accused ransacked her house, seriously injured her cow with a sharp-edged weapon and opened fire in the air.
Kaur further said the accused then entered the house of their neighbour Makhan Singh while chasing her family members who sought shelter there. When the villagers came to their rescue, the accused fled from the village.
Ranjit Singh (20), who accompanied HT to the fields where mining is allowed, said, “The government has given us approval for carrying out mining on 1 acre of land. Samund Singh has been demanding `200 per tractor-trolley for carrying out mining on the same land.”

{{/usCountry}}Samund came to the site on Sunday morning and asked them to stop mining and abused them, he alleged. He said the revenue department had conducted demarcation of the land on Saturday.
Shahkot deputy superintendent of police (DSP) RS Dhillon, who reached the spot, said statements of the family members and others are being recorded and then a case would be registered in this regard.
