ASI arrested for blackmailing

Punjab police on Saturday arrested assistant sub inspector (ASI) Ram Singh and his accomplice when he was accepting Rs 50,000 from an LIC agent near Prem Sabha School in the city.

Punjab police on Saturday arrested assistant sub inspector (ASI) Ram Singh and his accomplice when he was accepting Rs 50,000 from an LIC agent near Prem Sabha School in the city.

Police said Darbasa, who worked as an LIC agent after his retirement from irrigation department, along with his son Parmod Kumar approached the DSP Amargarh and informed that ASI Ram Singh, who is posted at Amargarh police station, was threatening and blackmailing him.

Narrating the incident, he said he had gone to the house of a woman for insurance where the ASI appeared and snatched Rs 10,000 and his identity card. ASI Ram Singh asked him to pay Rs one lakh and threatened to implicate him in false cases.

Darbasa later approached the DSP, Amargarh.

To catch the policeman red-handed, police asked the LIC agent to invite the ASI near the school to collect the first instalment of Rs 50,000. When Ram Singh was accepting the money from Darbasa a police team arrested him alongwith his accomplice Kuldeep. Police also impounded the car of the ASI.
