ASI shot at, escapes unhurt

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police was shot twice by six youths riding a car here on Saturday. The ASI, however, escaped unhurt.

An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Punjab Police was shot twice by six youths riding a car here on Saturday. The ASI, however, escaped unhurt.

Police sources said ASI Raman Kumar tried to stop a Toyota Innova Car, bearing registration number PB 06 Q 9986, for checking at a check-post near the Grain Market. As he signaled the car to stop, one of the youths in the car opened fire from his revolver. He fired twice and the youths then tried to flee the spot.

Immediately after the firing, a wireless message was broadcast within the police department and the police officials came into action. Three of the youths were arrested as police succeeded in catching up their car, but the other three managed to give them a slip.

The arrested youths have been identified as Harpreet Singh, Yadwinder Singh and Satpal Singh, all residents of Harike Pattan, Amritsar.

Superintendent of police (detective) Jagjit Singh Saroya said, "The police were just carrying out routine checking and when they tried to stop the Innova car, one of its occupants started firing at the police personnel. We have arrested three of the accused and the other three who are absconding will be arrested soon".

During preliminary investigations, it has been revealed that the three youths were reportedly going to "resolve a tangled love affair" wherein a close person of one of their families is involved. The accused who opened fire has been identified as Amritpal Singh. The other two absconding youths have been identified as Sabu and Jaspreet Singh.
