A non-resident Indian (NRI) woman, who had dragged the Punjab government to the Punjab and Haryana high court, challenging acquisition of land for a road leading to a resort, partly owned by the ruling Badal family in Mullanpur, near Chandigarh, has withdrawn her petition.
The development comes nearly a month after the high court had asked the parties for an amicable solution to the dispute. Juveeza Chadha wanted to withdraw the petition, her advocate told the high court bench of justice Surya Kant and justice Sudip Ahluwalia, following which the court ordered the petition “dismissed as withdrawn”.

Chadha’s family member, who refused to come on record, said the dispute had been resolved and she had taken compensation from the government. However, the family member refused to divulge details.Chadha is a resident of Majra village from where the 100-foot wide and 1.3-km road is being constructed in the Mullanpur area. The resort at Palanpur village is 2km from the point where the road ends. The acquisition was challenged in April 2015 following which high court had stayed the process. It was alleged that land acquisition was carried out in a hurried manner and requisite provisions were not followed.
The petitioner had arrayed chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal as respondent in the case. But HC declined to issue notice to them.
