Balram Jakhar cremated in Abohar village

Former Lok Sabha speaker Balram Jakhar was cremated at his native village, Panjkosi, in Abohar, a subdivision of Fazilka district, on Thursday.

Jakhar, a farmer-turned-politician, had died in New Delhi on Wednesday at the age of 92.

VK Meena, divisional commissioner, Ferozepur, laid a wreath on behalf of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Amar Singh Chahal, deputy inspector general (DIG), Ferozepur, and Ravinder Singh, Fazilka deputy commissioner, paid floral tributes on behalf of Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and deputy CM Sukhbir Badal, respectively.

Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, former Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, besides several party leaders from Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, were among the others who paid tributes.

After a guard of honour by the local police, Balram Jakhar’s son and Abohar MLA Sunil Jakhar lit the pyre.
