Ranjit's body was spotted by his widowed mother Gurmeet Kaur when she returned home from work. Gurmeet's other son Mandeep and her brother Bablu also live in her maternal house in Gopal Nagar here.

Talking to HT, the investigating officer in the case, assistant sub-inspector Krishan Kumar, said, "As per the preliminary investigation, it seems that the child committed suicide by hanging himself with a dupatta. Ranjit was alone at home when the incident occurred. A case under Section 174 of the CrPC (Criminal Procedural Code) has been registered."

Doctors at the civil hospital conducted the postmortem. They claimed that the body bore marks on the neck, but there was no injury or any mark on any other part of the body.
