The Bathinda police on Thursday arrested the patwari who was on the run after being booked for abetment in suicide case of a farmer in Lehra Bega village in the district.
With the arrest of all the three accused in the case, the family members of deceased Jaswant Singh and the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) finally cremated his body after over a week’s protest.
The protesters were demanding the arrest of accused patwari Jagjeet Singh as a pre-condition for the cremation of the farmer who had consumed poison on May 10, holding a suicide note accusing the patwari of harassment and blocking his land acquisition payment of Rs 34 lakh.
Jagjeet Singh, who remained “absconding” as per the police version for over a week, was arrested from Fatehabad in Haryana. The arrest came only after he was denied anticipatory bail in a Bathinda court.
After Jaswant’s cremation, his family now awaits the long pending Rs 34 lakh that the state administration owed to the deceased for his land acquired for the upcoming grain market near Bhucho.
Bathinda deputy commissioner (DC) Diparva Lakra is scheduled to convene a meeting with the family and BKU activists on Friday to discuss the payment of the land acquisition dues and the comensation that the protesters had demanded for the farmer who was “forced to commit suicide,” BKU Bathinda district chief Shinghara Singh Mann said.

The three were booked under Sections 306 (abetment to suicide) and 34 (act done by several persons under a common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Bhucho police station.
