With mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria dissolving eight sub-committees of the municipal corporation (MC), councillors of both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) are up in arms against the decision.
The mayor, who himself is a SAD councillor, claimed his decision was in public interest, but the councillors quashed his claim, claiming that though they were chairmen of these various sub-committees, they were not informed about the reason behind dissolving of committees.
Stating that the mayor’s decision was completely wrong, BJP councillors have demanded his resignation.
The mayor on Tuesday had dissolved the sub-committees of health and sanitation; water supply and sewerage; advertisement; vigilance; tehbazari; street lights; and transportation and purchase.
A senior BJP councillor, Gurdeep Singh Neetu, who was chairman of health and sanitation committee, said, “If the mayor thinks that we did not work in public interest then what did he do for the public? He should resign. We will raise this matter in the upcoming House meeting on July 25. I don’t want to be a member of any other committee after the mayor’s decision.”
BJP councillor Inderjit Agarwal, who was chairman of the advertisement committee, said, “The mayor has the right to dissolve these committees, but I don’t understand that why the mayor took this decision without keeping us in the loop?”

{{/usCountry}}Besides, SAD councillor Tanveer Singh Dhaliwal also claimed that he was shocked with the decision of the mayor. “It is wrong to take such decisions without the consent of councillors,” he added.
When contacted, Gohalwaria claimed, “I had formed these committees and now I will reconstitute them. It is my right and I have done nothing wrong. I had taken consent of councillors.”
