Bolaria, who is set to join the Congress on Tuesday, sent his resignation through fax and email to assembly speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal in the afternoon.

“I was feeling suffocated due to the functioning of the government, and could no longer be a part of it,” said Bolaria, who was suspended from the SAD in July this year after he raised a banner of revolt on the issue of a solid waste management plant proposed in his constituency.

The two-time MLA, who will be formally inducted into the Congress by its state chief, Capt Amarinder Singh, on Tuesday, said: “I had objected to the garbage dump in my assembly segment keeping in mind the health of people, but I was ignored. In a state, where chosen representatives have no right to raise their voice on public issues, it makes no sense to remain in the government.”

Raising concern over farmer suicides, Bolaria, in his resignation letter, mentioned that “giving justice to people has remained a distant dream in the SAD-BJP regime, while the government is looting people”. Bolaria was suspended from the SAD in July this year.
