The deceased, identified as Mandeep Singh, was living with his mother and sister.

Meanwhile, the police have booked a girl, Sandeep Kaur, 23, of Sangrur on charges of abetment to suicide in this connection.

Police said Mandeep had an affair with Sandeep, but due to some financial issues, they were estranged for the past few months.

They said the duo had studied in the same school in Sangrur and the boy’s family had shifted to Patiala two years ago.

In a police complaint, Mohinder Kaur, mother of the deceased who works as a clerk in Punjabi university, has alleged that her son was depressed for the past several days as the girl was not returning Rs 3.5 lakh, which she had borrowed from him to settle abroad.

An official associated with the investigations said, “The boy’s family had earlier taken up the matter with the girl’s family after which they promised to return the money. The deceased’s family claims that the girl’s family is now refusing to pay back the money.’’
