With uncertainty prevailing over the procurement of high-tech sensors for strengthening electronic surveillance along the Indo-Pak border, the Border Security Force (BSF) has decided to go ahead with the ‘laser beam’ technology after a successful trail at its Khasa headquarters here.
The BSF — which claims to have prepared it on its own — will start deploying the technology along the border shortly. The laser beam technology will caution the troops in case of a border trespass by raising an alarm and lighting up the breached area.
BSF deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, Amritsar sector, MF Farooqui, who was present at the Khasa headquarters during the trial on Saturday night, said, “We have developed a laser beam technology to further strengthen the security along the border fence, which is very effective and cheap. It will cost around `5,000 per 100 metre.”
“Intruders cannot see the laser beam, and when they try to cross the fence the beam will intercept them and raise an alarm, and lights will go on on the spot where the intruders have trespassed. This will immediately alert the troops, who can get hold of the situation,” said the DIG.
The DIG said, “We will conduct intensive analysis before setting up the device in a particular area, while sensitive areas and gaps along the fence will be priority. The technology can play a pivotal role in further strengthening the surveillance system.”
The Union government has chosen Punjab border to start with the electronic surveillance. Although a few trials have been taken place for high-tech sensors and other equipment, the border troops are yet to receive them.

However, with the laser beam technology, the BSF aims to check suspicious movements along the border and to get hold of smugglers and intruders.
During the trial, the DIG and other officials checked the equipment for efficiency to ensure good results once it is placed along the fence.
