Burnt girl critical, another suspect surrenders in court
The main suspect in the alleged molestation and harassment of a local girl surrendered in a court here on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the police had arrested three of the five suspects after the victim had tried to commit suicide by burning herself. Her condition now is critical at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College and Hospital here. The five suspects include the wife of the main suspect, Thana Singh "Pumma".
On Tuesday, the girl had poured kerosene oil on herself and set self ablaze to escape continuous molestation, teasing and harassment. Her parents had blamed it on harassment by some people in the same locality. Ambedkar Nagar. They attributed the girl's step to the suspects' insulting her father on the day of the incident.
Senior superintendent of police Gurpreet Singh Toor visited the hospital and spoke with the girl's parents. "A hunt is on for the woman suspect," he said. "The police will provide the victim's parents with security." He denied that the family had ever approached the police months ago, as the victim's parents had claimed.
Additional chief judicial magistrate Gurdarshan Kaur on Tuesday had recorded the girl's statement at the hospital. The police had then registered a case against five people under Sections 353 (obstructing a public servant) and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Deputy commissioner Ravi Bhagat also visited the hospital to ask about the girl's health and ensure that she got free-of-cost treatment and medicines. He also agreed to get the family financial help from the chief minister. The girl's father is a rickshaw puller.
The suspects as well as the victim belong to the Dalit community and live at Ambedkar Nagar near Kameana Gate here.
