A 35-year-old woman was burnt in an acid attack allegedly by her younger sister here on Monday evening. The statement of the victim, Narinder Kaur, reveals that it's a case of enmity between four sisters, with Narinder and Amandeep Kaur, 30, on the one side, and Jaswinder Kaur, 38, and Jaspal Kaur, 34, on the other.
Narinder, a resident of Partap Singh Wala, alleged that on Monday evening when she was on her way to the market with Amandeep, Jaspal met them on the way and stopped them for a conversation. As they did, Jaspal allegedly threw sulphuric acid on her face from a bottle and fled.
Amandeep called Narinder's husband Kuldeep Singh, and they rushed her to a hospital in Haibowal. Narinder suffered burns on her face and has apparently lost vision of an eye. Though she is out of danger since the acid seemed to have been diluted, tests are being conducted to ascertain the seriousness of the eye injury. Doctors attending to her could not be contacted.
Talking to HT, Narinder said Jaswinder instigated Jaspal. "Jaswinder and Jaspal have separated from their husbands and are involved in immoral activities. I often ask them to give up the profession, but they take offence. Jaswinder had adopted my son years ago and has sent him to the UK on study visa. She does not want me to talk to him, but I contact him regularly. This further angered Jaswinder, who had threatened me with an acid attack some days ago but I ignored it."
Narinder's husband Kuldeep said police should book Jaswinder and Jaspal. "This was not the first attack on my wife. Jaswinder had instigated an attack two years ago, too, when some hired goons beat up my wife. We had filed a police complaint, but dropped the charges on the request of my mother-in-law," he said.
