Amid the ongoing infighting in the state unit of the Congress, senior party leader Rana KP on Saturday claimed that Captain Amarinder Singh was the most deserving and ablest leader to head the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC).

Talking to Hindustan Times here, All India Congress Committe (AICC) member Rana KP said that Amarinder was removed as the Congress chief after certain party leaders with vested interests targeted him, holding him “unjustly” responsible for the defeat of the party in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections of 2007 and 2012 as well.

He said, “No wonder the Congress suffered defeat in Punjab Vidhan Sabha elections in 2012 as the party was almost routed across the country in the wake to the anti-Congress movements of Anna Hazare and Yoga guru Ram Dev and the involvement of some UPA ministers in different scams”.

KP, who is camping at the residence of PPCC member Raman Bahl here, pointed out that it was under the “able leadership” of Capt Singh that the party came to power in Punjab in 2002.

Asked as to why the leaders in the Amarider camp were not supporting Partap Singh Bajwa who has been duly appointed by the Congress high command as PPCC president, KP said that it was the duty of the party president to take along all rank and file of the party.

He said that as the chief minister, Capt Singh had taken a great decision of terminating the water treaties with the neighbouring states and managed to save Punjab waters from being shared with other states.
