Under attack from within the party after the debacle in the assembly polls, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Captain Amarinder Singh on Saturday tried to put up a brave face.
He held a tea party for Congress cadres and asked them to be ready for polls to local bodies due in the next few months.
At the party held at the erstwhile Patiala royals’ residence, New Moti Bagh Palace, he expressed gratitude to the rank and file from Patiala and said that SAD’s victory in the assembly polls “was due to our shortcomings, not due to something great that they (SAD) did”.
Amid all the talk of tension within the royal family, Amarinder was in fact flanked by his wife Preneet Kaur, who is the union minister of state for external affairs, and their daughter Jai Inder Kaur.
“Let’s not get into discussions on how the party has performed in the assembly polls. Definitely, there were some faults at the organisational level and we would remove those faults. At this point, our aim should be to consolidate the party position in the upcoming polls of the local bodies, in which the Shiromani Akali Dal would use all its might against the Congress workers,” Amarinder told the partymen.
Warning the SAD-BJP government against targeting Congress workers in vendetta cases, the PPCC president told the workers, “I will stand by you. Special instructions have been issued to all party MLAs to stay united whenever any vendetta case is reported anywhere in the state.”
