Two daily wage earners were killed after a person, allegedly in a drunken state, ran his car over them while they were sleeping on a pavement under an elevated highway here on Sunday night.

The deceased were identified as Ishaq Lal (50) of Bihar and Deepak (30) of Bada Guda village in Karnal district.

Accused Babbar of Ganaur in Sonepat district, who was driving a white Maruti Swift (DL-2CAS-7775), was arrested on the spot.
According to the police, the victims were sleeping under Nirmal Kutiya flyover on the national highway-1.

Police said that Babbar, who was accompanied by three friends, was allegedly driving the vehicle at a high speed and he lost control over the vehicle under the flyover. It strayed onto the pavement and crushed Deepak and Ishaq to death.

An eyewitness, Raj Kumar, said that Babbar and his friends tried to escape from the spot but they were overpowered by rickshaw-pullers and other persons who gathered on the spot.

The victims were rushed to the trauma centre at the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College here where they were declared brought dead.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Babbar was driving the car. A medical examination confirmed that Babbar was under the influence of alcohol at the time of driving the vehicle. His three friends were released thereafter.

A police spokesman said that a case under Sections 279 (rash driving), 304-A (causing death due to rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 185 (driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs) of the Motor Vehicles Act was registered against Babbar.
