Central Board of Secondary Education has directed schools to state whether they have a barrier free environment in schools for differently-abled students.
In the latest circular uploaded on its website, CBSE has asked schools to answer a 12-point questionnaire on whether they have a barrier free environment as mandated by the Persons with Disability Act, 1995, and the board's bylaws.
The questionnaire asks schools to state whether they have ramps at all access points, a separate toilet for such students, lifts, bathrooms and drinking water facilities customised to suit the needs of disabled student, support railings facilitate their easy movement and sign boards is Braille.
Schools that do not have such facilities have also been asked to mention when they could provide them.
Mona Singh, principal of Guru Nanak Public school, Sarabha Nagar, said, "Our school is a 40-year-old institution. We have lifts in our school but there are no ramps. We have never stopped students from using the lifts." She added that the school would send the feedback form soon.
Pradeep Kaur, principal of Shamrock Christian Senior Secondary School, Hambran Road said that the school has already lowered the height of toilet seats to suit the needs of differently-abled students.
