Punjab education department has introduced a changed model of continuous comprehensive evaluation (CCE) programme for school students. The Director General of School Education (DGSE) has issued fresh directions for the changed CCE, an official release said on Thursday.
Under the Right to Education (RTE), the CCE was introduced in August 2010 for Classes 1 to 8.
As part of this system, the schools were supposed to conduct formative and summative assessments of their students instead of the "exam-based assessment".
The teachers complained that they were bogged down by multiple tests, corrections and maintaining the observation books.
Punjab teachers unions have been opposing the current model of CCE and seeking a change. Teachers claimed that they had no problem with the implementation of the CCE because it was mandatory under the RTE but it should be simple and practical.
With an updated model of CCE, a subject teacher now would evaluate formative assessment of each student once in two months as compared to every week earlier on.
Many school teachers have welcomed the step of the Punjab government and said that they would not have enough time to teach students rather than logging information of each student.
