Daresi and surrounding areas, generally known as the hub of hosiery and cash transaction business, have been prone to snatching incidents.

"Despite relentless efforts, police were getting a headache from snatchers who forcibly took cash, gold chains and purses from passersby and disappeared in the lanes and bylanes in a fraction of second," said sub-inspector Sanjiv Kapoor, station house officer of Daresi police station.

Daresi police then identified the spots in their area of jurisdiction where most snatchings had occurred in the past.

Police also held discussions with local market associations and institutes to set up CCTV cameras at strategic locations in Mali Gunj, Bajwa Nagar, Shahi Dawakhana Chowk, Purana Bazaar Chowk, Kamla Lohtia College and SDP College for Girls.

"Both traders as well as those frequenting the area are fed up of crimes like vehicle-lifting and burglaries. We held talks with police officials who advised us to install CCTVs. No untoward incident has occurred since these cameras were installed," said Rakesh Puri, president of Mali Gunj traders association.
