An inmate, whom the jail authorities claimed was a 'drug addict' committed suicide on Thursday by strangulating himself using the chain he was tied with.
The deceased, Balkar Singh (23), a resident of Dedhna village was in jail since July 23 and was booked under the NDPS act for possessing 10-gm smack.
Meanwhile, the parents of the deceased are demanding an FIR against the jail authorities for negligence. "The news is shocking, we didn't even know that he was in jail. He had gone on July 21 to meet his sister. Police claim that they held him with 10-gm smack. Balkar was not a drug addict," said Rulda Singh, father of the deceased.
He said apart from the daily work, Balkar was helping him at the farm and he never indulged in drugs. "If the police had arrested him on July 21, it was their duty to inform the family."
On the other hand, jail authorities claim that the accused was a 'drug addict' and would turn volatile due to his addiction. Jail superintendent Bhupinder Singh said that a magisterial probe has been ordered. He said that the accused was an addict and was sent to jail on July 23, after he was found in possession of smack.
However, Lakhbir Singh, sarpanch of Dedhna village, said that the family would move high court against the police and the jail authorities, who were responsible for the death of Balkar.
