The findings of the state-level achievement survey which released its studies in September stated that primary level students couldn’t solve basic mathematical problems or even read or write simple English.

Following these findings and NCERT assessments, the education-cum finance secretary in October had proposed to form ‘inspection’ committees to see in which fields government schools were lagging behind.

The education department has finally decided to rope in the State Council Educational Research and Training (SCERT) institute which would look into school academics.

Commenting on it, the director public instructions (schools) Rubinderjit Singh Brar said, “We have planned to collaborate with the SCERT to form separate committees.

These committees will be responsible to further look after the all round development of government schools. We are yet to do this, officially.”

Dahiya spoke about what the committees would require to focus on. “The committees will focus not only on children but the teachers as well, who need counseling. School principals will also need to meet frequently since they are responsible for the over-all development of the school, be it in academics, co-curricular or sports.

It is the principals who are required to discuss the path on how to improve their results and the kind of environment they want to provide to students,”Dahi added.
