A 20-year-old supermarket salesman was arrested for allegedly raping his 12-year-old neighbour at Dadumajra Colony in Chandigarh on Wednesday.

The accused has been identified as Shammi Kumar, a salesman at Bansal Superstore in Sector 7, Chandigarh. He lives in the Char Manzila quarters near the victim’s house.

Police said the victim, a Class-6 student, was alone at home, while her parents were away to work on Wednesday morning. Around 10am, Kumar knocked at the victim’s door, looking for accommodation on rent. When the girl replied in the negative and tried to close the main door, the youth asked her for water.

As she left to get some, Kumar closed the door from the inside, and raped the girl, before fleeing the house, the police said. He also stole about Rs 500 from her house, and threatened her of dire consequences if she revealed the matter to anyone. The girl narrated the matter to her mother over the phone. The latter then informed her husband to return from work, following which he sounded the police.
