With the New Year round the corner and party enthusiasts all set to hit the deck, the city police have tightened their belts to tight the noose around drunken drivers by installing special nakas (barricades) at several points from Monday.
Police claim that its intent is not to spoil the joy of people, but to keep a check on those who are creating hullabaloo.
With seven alcometers at their disposal, police will put up nakas at five different places to check drunken driving.
Notably, the traffic police have been quite serious on drunken driving and have challaned nearly 1,700 people in the past three months.
Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP-traffic) Dhruman Nimbale said, “We are very strict on drunken driving and have made various efforts to curtail the number of accidents involving drunken driving.”
“With the New Year approaching, the incidents of drunken driving may go up, and hence, we have intensified our vigil to keep a close tab on drunken drivers,” said the ADCP.
Nakas would be laid at five different locations, he said, where cops would be laced with alcometer. “Our intent is not to spoil the joy, but keep a tab on drunken and rowdy elements for the safety of party lovers,” he added.
Causality in accidents has come down: ADCP
Claiming that the intensified campaign against drunken driving has brought down the number of accidents, thereby curtailing fatalities, ADCP Nimbale said: “In 2013, from September to December 31, 33 deaths due to accidents had been reported in Amritsar, whereas from September 1 to December 26 this year, the figure reduced to 18.”

In the past three months, we challaned nearly 1,700 people for drunken driving, which in turn had curtailed the deaths due to accidents owing to drunken driving in the city, he claimed.
“We believe that the traffic police’s efforts to check drunken driving, helmets, seat belts etc have resulted in reducing causalities,” he added.
“On an average, one person is killed in accident after every three-day in Amritsar,” he added.
