Garbage dumps outside educational institutes in the city are becoming a nuisance for students and commuters. These dumps near Khalsa College for Women, SCD Government College, Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, government primary school, Kutcha Number 16, are raising a stink around these institutes. Students and teachers have to bear the foul smell all time.
Though the garbage from a dump near Khalsa College for Women is lifted three times in a day and efforts are made to cover it from two sides, this has not brought any relief for commuters and students. Even stray cattle and dogs wander there. These dumps are a health hazard for students and commuters as it is covered with flies all the time. The authorities concerned have turned a blind eye towards the unhygienic conditions as garbage should be lifted on a daily basis.
Ashok Singla, a resident of Ghumar Mandi, said, “It is difficult to operate the Punjab and Sind Bank ATM that is located near a garbage dump. I don’t know how people in the bank work for eight hours there. It is difficult to stand there even for a minute.”
There is a garbage dump outside the school at Kutcha Number 16, Field Ganj. In the absence of a boundary wall and a proper gate, the school becomes an open garbage dump for the nearby residents. Students are also forced to spend the day among flies and stench. Principal of Khalsa College for Women Renu Saini said, “We have classrooms and laboratories situated near the garbage dump, due to which the students are facing problems and are not able to concentrate on their studies. We have written to the municipal corporation (MC) commissioner several times, but all in vain. The dump has not been shifted till now. The garbage should be lifted either early in the morning or at night. The truck to pick up the garbage comes at 1 pm when the students are leaving the college. This creates a chaos on the road.”

The foul smell emanating from the garbage dump is a big nuisance. Moreover, we face a lot of embarrassment during school functions. The truck that lifts the garbage has broken our boundary wall twice. We had to repair the wall on our own.”
