Forensic science has become elemental in probing crime incidents such as murder, loot, terrorist attack or blast. The police department is looking forward to have district mobile forensic units in its fleet.

Sources said the decision was taken after the police sought help of the forensic science laboratory in the double murder case of Moga DSP Balraj Singh Gill and Monika Bajaj Kapila.

As the city police sought help of the forensic science laboratory, it caused delay in the reports that gave the culprits time to abscond.

The police have mobile forensic units at the zone level, but now the department has realised that every district should be provided with such expertise, especially major cities such as Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Patiala.

According to police officials, the district mobile forensic units will help collect clues and play a vital role in crime detection. A major advantage would be that the unit would be able to reach the crime spot and produce quick results.

"Generally, the police collect samples from the crime spot and preserve it. After a lot of paper work and formalities, the sample is dispatched to the laboratories and it takes days for the result to come out.

In many cases, criminals get an advantage because of the lengthy process," said a senior official of the police comissionerate, Ludhiana. Police commissioner Ishwar Chander was not available for comment.
