As many as five persons were severely injured in a violent clash between residents of two villages over a land dispute on Sunday.
Sarpanchs of both villages are Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) supporters.
Alleging police inaction, the victims on Monday approached the police commissioner, who marked an inquiry to additional deputy commissioner of police (industrial security) and ADCP (headquarters).
In their complaint, residents of Salempur village led by Gurnam Singh, husband of village sarpanch Dalip Kaur, alleged that Sohan Singh, sarpanch of Dholanwal village, and his accomplices wanted to grab the land of a school ground in their village, and they had even filed a complaint regarding this with the district administration.
Gurnam said on Sunday, the villagers were installing tents on the land to organise a religious programme on Monday. Meanwhile, Sohan Singh, along with his accomplices, reached there and opened attack on the people installing tents with sharp-edged weapons and sticks, leaving five persons injured. As people gathered on the spot, the accused managed to flee, he alleged.
Alleging police inaction, Gur nam said when they approached the Mattewara police post seeking an FIR against the accused, instead of lodging a case, the police started coercing them to reach a compromise. Therefore, they met the police commissioner on Monday.
