About 7,000 computer teachers in the state will hold a protest in Jalandhar on October 8 to put pressure on the state government for the unconditional release of computer teachers lodged in Nabha jail.
A joint press release issued by Gurjit Singh Virk, the convener of the district unit of the Computer Teachers Joint Front, Gurpreet Singh Bains and Seema Kaushal stated that on September 21, they had organised a peaceful dharna outside the office of the director general of secondary education in Mohali and Parminder Singh of Muktsar had started a fast unto death.
They said on September 26, the police forcibly rounded up protesting teachers including women computer teachers and lodged them in the Mohali police station. They further said the police had launched a search operation and raided the houses of the computer teachers to arrest them.
However, the police had to release the teachers after they intensified their agitation but the state convener Gurvinder Singh of Tarn Taran, Baljinder Singh Fatehpur and Parminder Sivia and 14 other were implicated in false cases and lodged in Nabha jail.
They further said the state government was bent on committing atrocities towards them instead of fulfilling their demands. He said besides the protest rally, teachers would also distribute pamphlets among people to highlight the atrocities committed by the state government and that their other demand was to bring their services under the education department.
