Of the 17 block samitis in the Sultanpur Lodhi assembly constituency, the Congress won at Tibba, Merrypur, Mahablipur and Kabirpur. It ran a close second in three more zones.

"For the first time after independence, we have managed to win Tibba, a bastion of former finance minister Bibi Upinderjit Kaur. This shows that for the first time, people showed courage to vote against her," Cheema said.

"The Congress has also won at another zone, Seechewal, which was part of my constituency in the assembly polls," he told HT.

In the Nadala block samiti polls, the SAD has won 12 zones, with the Congress winning three.

In Dhilwan block samiti, in the three results declared till the filing of this report, SAD had won two seats, with the Congress wresting one.

"This is morale booster for me. I toiled hard at the grassroot level in the rural parts of the constituency and the results and trends reflect that. People have rejected Rana Gurjit. His days are over now," halqa in-charge of SAD and district planning committee chairman Sarabjit Singh Makkar said.
