Congress general secretary in-charge for Punjab Shakeel Ahmad said they had officially announced Sikki’s name on Tuesday afternoon. On whether Sikki would be present in person to file his nomination papers at Khadoor Sahib, his political mentor, MLA Rana Gurjit Singh, said he (Sikki) would go if Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh asks him to.

“We have the nomination papers ready. All depends on our state chief. If he asks him to contest and go to Khadoor Sahib, he would take a leave from his sewa and do so,” he said.

Sikki is incommunicado owing to his monthlong sewa (voluntary service) at Golden Temple. But a section in Congress, who have been advising Amarinder to boycott the polls, maintained that the final word in this regard is yet to be said.

Earlier, Sikki had resigned from his post in November 2015 over series of sacrilege incidents in Tarn Taran district.

This time he is pitted against Shiromani Akali Dal’s Ravinder Singh Brahmpura, who is son of Akali stalwart Ranjit Singh Brahmpura. Interestingly, Brahmpura Senior had suffered defeat at Sikki’s hands in the last assembly polls in 2012.
