The Congress on Friday sought the support of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) for getting the proposed All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-level institute to the holy city.
A delegation of local Congress leaders led by Amritsar (rural) District Congress Committee (DCC) chief Gurjeet Singh Aujla submitted a memorandum addressed to SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar, seeking support for their demand.
As Makkar was away, the memorandum was received by SGPC secretaries Roop Singh and Manjit Singh.
In the memorandum, the Congress leaders pointed out that there could be no better place than the holy city for setting-up of the proposed AIIMS-level institute.
They pointed out that as the Golden Temple was among the world’s “most visited” places, the medical services here should also be “among the best in the country”.
“Thousands of tourists arrive here each day from various parts of the globe. Thus, proper and specialised medical care is a must in a place that receives so many tourists and pilgrims,” stated DCC chief Aujla.
He pointed out that over the years Amritsar had suffered a great deal that had hindered its progress. First, it was terrorism and then later, the city suffered due to the attitude of the state political leaders, he added.

{{/usCountry}}“We had the prestigious Central University project, which was snatched from us by the Badals and taken to Bathinda. We
all very well know the fate of this project in Bathinda. If it had stayed on in Amritsar, it would have benefited a large number of students, which has not been the case in Bathinda,” he added in the memorandum.
The Congress leader also appealed to the Badals to give the project to the holy city. He said the project woulkd also help reviving the economy of the city.
