Besides taking action against erring auto-rickshaws and overloaded school vans, the traffic wing of the Ludhiana police commissionerate has come with a smart way - road engineering - to ease traffic, especially at identified bottlenecks in the city.
With the help of the municipal corporation, the traffic wing has trimmed the eyelid of the road at Jagraon Bridge by at least two ft to ease the traffic at Jagraon Bridge.
"As Jagraon Bridge is the only available stretch that connects two parts of the city, it bears a huge burden of traffic. The bridge witnesses traffic jams especially during morning and evening hours. Traffic cops used to struggle to deal with the problem," said Beant Juneja, inspector traffic.
"We observed that huge eyelids that have been built on the road could be trimmed to eradicate the problem. In the first phase, the wing has trimmed the Jagraon Bridge eyelid by 2 ft to maintain the flow of the traffic coming from Bharat Nagar Chowk. The flow of traffic on the specific route has apparently improved," he added.
The police have also erected temporary verges on the road to ease the traffic of both the sides. On the other hand, the police have also installed verges at Bharat Nagar Chowk, New Court Chowk and Bhai Bala Chowk and specified different routes for the buses.
Inspector traffic Beant Juneja said usually buses on this route violate the lane that created obstacles in traffic. With the installation of verges, the flow of the traffic has eased on these roads.
