A couple allegedly tried to commit suicide on Wednesday. The victims have been identified as Deepak Kumar, 32, and his wife Richa, 29, residents of the Mundian Kalan area.
Richa was allegedly harassed by her mother-in-law which forced her to consume phenyl from a bottle kept in the house for cleaning purpose. Minutes later, Deepak consumed excessive sleeping pills. The family members rushed them to the civil hospital, where their condition was stated to be stable.
Police reached the hospital and their home where both had attempted suicide. Investigations into the matter were on.
Richa's father Mukesh Kumar said his daughter married Deepak eight years ago and the couple had two children. He alleged that Richa's mother-in-law started harassing her soon after the marriage and demanded dowry due to which she remained in depression.
In the police complaint, Kumar also alleged that Richa had been asked to divorce her Deepak if she was unable to bring dowry.
In-charge of Mundiyan Kalan police post Sanjeev Kumar said the police had recorded Richa's statement and would register the case against the accused after initial investigation in the case.
