Taking note of the media reports of the Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Nehru Garden, hostel in dire straits, Jalandhar MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh with immediate assistance on basic facilities.
Chief parliamentary secretary Pawan Tinu also visited the school and asked the school authorities to utilise the grant of Rs 2 lakh that he had sanctioned in the past for repair work.The students interacted with Chaudhary and Tinu and shared their plight of staying in a hostel with leaking roofs and insanitary conditions.
The hostel of the school comes under the Sports Authority of India (SAI) as the school is running various sports wings for games like hockey, judo and basketball. The intake of the hostel is 62 out of which 51 girls live in the hockey wing in 19 rooms where four to five students put up in a single room.
The students said they were not getting proper toilets. "We have three toilets on one floor and water supply is irregular. The problem of sewerage blockage is routine," a student said.The MP announced a grant of `5 lakh for upgrading the gym, repairing toilets and sanitation apart from RO drinking water.
"There are a lot of things that need to be done in the school. The school has produced good international hockey players so the students must have a proper gym and ground for practice," Chaudhary said. He added he would write to SAI to get the building renovated.

{{/usCountry}}On the request of the students, the MP also asked the school authorities to arrange a doctor's regular visit to the hostel. "I will also ask district education officer to ask the education department for a warden and helper in the school," he added.
Tinu instructed the mess contractor to provide proper diet for the students. The principal of the school, Gurinderjeet Kaur, asked Tinu to ask the government to pay electricity bills of the schools as they had to make payments from school funds.
"I have already raised the issue in the vidhan sabha that the government must make a provision to pay electricity bills," said Tinu.
