Cricket betting racket busted, five arrested

The city police claimed to have busted a cricket betting racket with the arrest of five persons and the seizure of one laptop, 11 mobile phones and Rs 42,000 from their possession.

The city police claimed to have busted a cricket betting racket with the arrest of five persons and the seizure of one laptop, 11 mobile phones and Rs 42,000 from their possession.

Acting on a tip off, a police party raided a building at Tara Singh Avenue locality, late Tuesday night and arrested five people, while they were fixing bets on the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between Mumbai Indians and Kolkata ACP Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu told HT.

The accused have been identified as Varun Sharma, Jatin Sharma, Atul Arora, Parminder Singh and Lucky Marwaha, the ACP said, adding that the accused used to take bets on mobile phones for their masterminds in Mumbai and Delhi.

A case under the Gambling Act and Section 420 of IPC has been registered against the accused in Basti Bawa Khel police station.
