At present, the centre doesn't have any permanent psychiatrist. It is pertinent to mention here that Dr Sudha Vasudev and Dr Ashish were arrested from Mullanpur last week on the charges of selling de-addiction medicine without licence and 18,500 tables of buprenorphine were recovered from them. A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against them.

Earlier, on Saturday, psychiatrist at Jagraon de-addiction centre, Dr Raina Garg was posted in Ludhiana de-addiction centre. But, as he already has to look after the Jagraon centre, he will visit here only two days a week (Tuesday and Friday).

So, to cater to the patients here, civil surgeon's office posted Dr psychiatrist Sushil Jain from Raikot at the Ludhiana de-addiction centre, who will be here four days a week.

The health department on December 21 held a walk-in-interview for the post of medical officer psychiatrist at Ludhiana centre, but no information has been received from Chandigarh till now.

The district has two de-addiction centres- Ludhiana and Jagraon, besides a Red Cross de-addiction centre run by the Ludhiana district administration is also looked after by a government psychiatrist.

The psychiatrist at Ludhiana de-addiction centre also have to look into the OPD cases of Lord Mahavira Civil Hospital, court cases and jail duty cases.

Dr Jasbir Singh said, “We are short of psychiatrists across Punjab, thus we are forced to manage many centres with single psychiatrists. We had sent our demand to the department and hope to get more psychiatrists soon.”
