The deceased owned less than half hectare of land and had a debt of more than Rs 1 lakh.

Jasbir Singh, press secretary of the Bhartiya Kisan Union (Ugarahan) said the deceased once owned 2.5 hectare land, but sold a major chunk of his land at the time of his daughter’s marriage and for other purposes during the past five years.

“He was now planning the marriage of his other daughter and son, but was unable to do so,” he said.

The family members said he had been under depression due to poor fiscal condition of the family. The farmer union and village panchayat demanded adequate compensation to the aggrieved family, besides waiving of the loan.

“The government must give a compensation of Rs 10 lakh, besides a government job to a member of his family,” said Balwinder Singh, sarpanch of the village.
