Led by Anganwadi Workers Union general secretary Daljinder Kaur, the protesters held that the victim belonged to a very poor family, who even didn't have a gate in front of their house.

Demanding death penalty for the accused, Harpal Singh, a resident of the same village, for his horrendous act, the protesters claimed that "entire village was asking for the capital punishment for the accused".

Later, union members and residents sent a signed memorandum to the President of India.

The incident took place on the night of September 9, when the victim was sleeping with her mother, Harpal allegedly abducted her and took her to a nearby drain and "raped her repeatedly.

When the victim's mother noticed her girl missing around 1am, she raised alarms and called on her neighbours, who launched a manfor the girl, who was found lying in unconscious in a field and was rushed to the Baba Bakala civil hospital.
