Saying that the academic session in the school would begin from August 1, Dhaliwal informed that chief minister (CM) Parkash Singh Badal had set a deadline of July 15 to complete the work of 18 classrooms, three computer labs, library and other necessity services, while the work on the first phase of girls hostel building will be completed by July 31.

He added that the government identified land in Urban Estate for the boys' hostel, the work for which will soon begin.

The school, being constructed on 5.75 acre at a cost ` 20 crore, will provide free education to children from economically weaker sections who have scored 80% in the matriculation examination.

It may be recalled that the school's construction sparked a controversy after the cash-strapped Punjabi University handed over the only available prime state to the state government last year, free of cost.

The state government decided to open six Adarsh residential schools across the state, meant for the students with more than 80% in the matriculation examination. Once the schools are established, the government is likely to hand over the schools to private parties.
