A day after skipping the Dhuri byelection meeting called by Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa, the Captain Amarinder Singh group on Monday held the former responsible for the division in the party.
The severe criticism comes from nowhere else but the home district of Bajwa, as Gurdaspur District Congress Committee (DCC) president Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Fatehgarh Churian’s Tripat Rajinder Singh Bajwa, Kewal Singh Dhillon, Hardial Singh Kamboj, Balbir Singh Sidhu, and Sukhbinder Singh Sukh Sarkaria, all sitting legislators, accuse him of hanging on to the post in spite of losing command and workers’ respect.
One of the leaders said that by not inviting Amritsar MP Captain Amarinder Singh to Dhuri and then telling the media that ‘the campaign didn’t need “big faces”, Bajwa had prepared the ground for a flop Dhuri meeting. “Captain Amarinder had a tight schedule, yet he visited Dhuri on the day of the nomination to prove that he was willing to campaign for the sake of unity in the party. However, anticipating that all Congress leaders would rally around Amarinder, Bajwa did not invite him, forcing Captain to withdraw from the campaign,” the leader added.
Only seven Congress legislators reached Dhuri for the campaign committee meeting, which was a damp squib. “Even the MLAs in attendance questioned the absence of Amarinder, which indicates that he is still tallest Congress leader of Punjab,” said another party MLA. The leaders said that by not inviting Amarinder and giving a press statement against him, Bajwa had tried to use the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) as a platform to settle a personal score.
