Diploma courses in huge demand in Doaba region

As many as 4,300 forms, of which 4,000 are online, of the Joint Entrance Test JET-2014) scheduled to held on April 20, were submitted till Tuesday.
The applications for JET-2014 were invited from candidates seeking admission to three-year diploma courses in the institutions affiliated to the board in Punjab and Chandigarh. The admission would be based on the JET merit.
Surjit Lal, district coordinator for the test, said there was a huge demand for such courses in the Doaba region as they were considered good for self-employment.
“The students after completing their Class 10 can pick these diploma courses which are helpful in providing them employment opportunities. Most of the diploma courses students from the region opt for are of lab technician, information, leather, footwear, plastic technology, architectural assistant and chemical engineering,” he added.
He said the aim is to motivate the students so that they could pursue diplomas in various streams and could evaluate themselves.
“We have asked the government schools to inform the students so that more students can apply and appear in the entrance exam,” he said.
Last year, around 12,000 students had applied for Joint Entrance Test from the district at 21 examination centres.
The test is open to candidates who have passed matriculation or equivalent examination in mathematics, science (physics, chemistry and biology) and English from the state board or central boards, including CBSE, ICSE and national open school, or from any other country.
The forms are available at all polytechnic colleges, suwidha centres and district education office for Rs 50 for private school students and Rs 40 for government school students.
The last date for the submission of the application forms is till March 28.
The examination centres where the examination would be conducted are government schools in Adampur, Alawalpur, Bhogpur, Goraya, Jalandhar cantonment, Jandiala, Kartarpur, Lohian Khas, Nakodar, Nurmahal, Phillaur and Shahkot.
The applications are invited in 147 polytechnic colleges for filling 60,000 seats. “The fee structure for the diploma course is Rs 18,000 for general category and Rs 15,000 for Scheduled Caste category,” he added.
