Unidentified attackers fired upon Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district press secretary Gaurav Bhandari, who is also chief parliamentary secretary Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s personal assistant, on Thursday night on the Gumtala bypass near her house here. They asked for her first.
The attack came when Bhandari was leaving Dr Sidhu’s house on his motorcycle. The men first bashed him up before shooting at him while fleeing. A case under Sections 323 (punishment for causing hurt voluntarily), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 336 (act endangering life and personal safety of others), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), and 34 (common intent in crime) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered at the cantonment police station but no arrests has yet been made.
Condemning the attack, the CPS posted in a status update on her Facebook page that: “My personal assistant, Gaurav Bhandari, who is also media adviser to the district BJP, was attacked by four goons who were in an Innova car just outside the holy city and very near to Gumtala Chowk.”
The assailants asked Bhandari if “madam” (Dr Sidhu) had returned from the Vidhan Sabha session. “Even though injured, he kept lying on the ground, which saved him. Whoever has a problem with me should confront me, not my men. No power on this planet can stop me from walking the path of truthful service,” said the CPS.
