For the first time, the army tested candidates for drug addiction at the four-daylong recruitment rally that concluded at the Cantonment here on Saturday.
All the candidates, who cleared the 1,600-meter race in six minutes, were sent to the dark room to check if they were drug addicts.
Every candidate was taken to the dark room which was virtually dark and then his eyes were exposed to high beam of light to check the movement of the pupil of the eyes.
The idea behind the test is that the pupils of the drug addicts would not react to the light whereas normal candidates’ pupils would make obvious reaction to light. Apart from that, candidates were also tested for other symptoms of drug addiction like shivering of hands etc.
However, not a single candidate failed in this drug addiction test and all the candidates who were taken to the dark room made it to the next round.
The rally concluded on Saturday for physical tests and documentation. The process of medical testing and written test will be completed by May 31.
The procedure for recruitment went through five main stages: 1,600-metre race, documentation, physical measurement, complete medical checkup and then a written test. First of all, the race wasc conducted to check the physical strength of contestants. The contenders should run 1,600 meters within 6 minutes.
The physical test at the recruitment rally for Bathinda and Faridkot districts was conducted at the camping ground of the Cantonment, Bathinda, from April 29. More than 8,500 candidates had come to attend the rally till Saturday.
Bhushan Kuncheria, colonel and director of recruitment, Ferozepur, said, “In the recruitment procedure, the drug testing was added recently to ensure that drug addicted candidates could not join the army. None of the candidates was tested positive for drugs. All the candidates, who cleared the physical measurements test, are free from drugs.”
