The Godavari river which flows along the sides of Hazur Sahib has been polluted by the direct flow of sewage waste into the river.

Addressing reporters at the Chandigarh Press Club here on Saturday, EcoSikh president Rajwant Singh emphasised on the need to protect the religious sites from deteriorating. "Nanded is a historic land and the Godavari is closely associated with it. The Godavari overflowes with garbage and poisonous substances and the government authorities have warned the people about the harmful effects of the water which not only makes it unsafe for drinking but even for taking a bath."

With the increasing pollution in the Godavari, the religious traditions of the sanctum sanctorum have to be altered as the gurdwara authorities have said that they have to travel extra miles to fetch clean water.

EcoSikh is proactively spearheading a movement to clean and make Sikh pilgrimage sites in India pollution free.

EcoSikh undertook a trip recently along with the Nanded Gurdwara Board members and ICLEI officials of Takht Shri Hazur Sahib and other historic gurdwaras in Nanded to understand the extent of environmental problems.
