Embarked on a 2,300 km camel safari along India’s international border with Pakistan, a contingent of 27 women, including BSF women constables traversing tough terrains in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Punjab on camel reached here on Saturday.
The woman camel safari symbolised ‘women power’ and ‘women empowerment’. The safari was flagged off from Bhuj in Gujarat on February 24 and would be received by home minister Rajnath singh at the Attari border near Amritsar on March 22 (Sunday).
“The safari traversed about 900km in Gujarat, 1,100km in Rajasthan and 300km in Punjab. The teams was led by BSF assistant commandant Saroj Shinde and backed by Bachendri Pal, the first Indian woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest (1984) and Premlata Agarwal, the oldest Indian woman (at the age of 48) scaled the Mount Everest (29,029 feet). She also became the first person from Jharkhand to go on an expedition to Mount Everest,” shares BSF sub inspector Pintu Chaudhery, who was among one of them who were leading the contingent.
Sharing challenges during the safari she said, “We had different weathers to witness, there were days which were very hot and nights very cold. There were rainy areas too. But being in the BSF, we are quite use to of extreme weathers as even during our duty, which is eight to nine, we stand tall guarding borders with weather no bar.”
After receiving the women contingent, BSF deputy inspector general (DIG), Amritsar range, MF Farooqui said, “The Border Guarding Force of India was established on December 1, 1965, which in December 2015 would be celebrating its Golden Jubilee and the camel safari was a part of the celebration. The BSF has tied up with Tata Steel Adventure Foundation for the safari.”
