BSNL’s departments dealing with the public, including cash counters and customer service centres remained closed on Thursday following a strike called by BSNL Employees’ Unions and the National Federation of Telecom Employees to protest the company’s failure to pay annual increments since the past several years.
The call was given by the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of BSNL Unions and Associations of Non Executive to demand the settlement of their problems.
“The lowest cadre of BSNL, the regular mazdoors, has reached a point of stagnation. Thousands of BSNL employees recruited on or after January 1, 2007 are losing a substantial amount of their pay every month.” said BSNLEU circle secretary Balbir Singh.
He said the BSNL management had frozen LTC (leave travel concession) and stopped fix medical allowance for the treatment of self and families. Productivity link incentive was also not being paid since the past four years.
The committee had submitted a charter of 30 demands to the telecom company’s management on October 8 this year.
Management had called a meeting on Tuesday, but it yielded no results. “The management did not accept even a single demand. Therefore, 1, 86, 000 non-executive employees were forced to go on a strike,” said JAC convener Balwinder Singh and president Surjit Singh.
The union urged the central leadership to intensify their protest if their demands are not met.
