Police on Thursday arrested a mechanical engineering diploma-holder for sending extortion letters to three Janta Colony shopkeepers.
Jagir Shah, 26, of Patti was staying in the same locality as a tenant.
“Shah sent these letters to shopkeepers on April 29 to make a fast buck,” assistant commissioner of police (North) Navneet Singh Mahal told reporters.
Division No 1 station house officer Navdeep Singh said a mobile number was mentioned in the letters that told traders to pay Rs 50,000 or face consequences.
Police zeroed in on the number and reached the person on whose name the SIM card was issued. It was revealed that the man had lost the SIM card some days ago and registered a complaint to police in this regard.
“We nailed Shah after he put the SIM card in his mobile,” he added.
A CCTV footage also shows Shah slipping the letter under the shutter of one of the shops, said the SHO.
The accused was booked under section 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) of the IPC.
