Members of the Elementary Teachers Training (ETT) Union burnt an effigy of the Punjab government and held a protest march in favour of their demands.
The protesters had gathered in the Children's Park here, but were not allowed to step out of the park as the police suspected them of resorting to block traffic. After much persuasion, the police allowed them to take out a protest march and burn the state government's effigy.
President of union Gurjit Singh Jassi said that ETT teachers have been demanding to bring them under the state education department, but the government has not paid any heed towards their demand.
He said that their state unit president Jaswinder Singh Sidhu is on fast-unto-death in Mohali for the past nine days, but the government was not ready to listen to them.
He said that the union will intensify the protest in coming days and will gherao the house of former education minister, now rural development minister Sikandar Singh Maluka, in Bathinda on July 31 whereas a candlelight march will also be taken the same evening in the city.
ETT teachers also blocked traffic at the Taraksheel chowk at Barnala on Monday They also burnt an effigy of the state government.
District president of the union, Malkit Singh Kattu said, "Our state president Jaswinder Singh Sidhu has been sitting on a fast-unto-death for the past nine days and his health is deteriorating day-by-day, but the government has not responded to our demand of merger of Zila Parishad schools with the education department."
