Ex-armyman held for spying for Pakistan

The state special operations cell (SSOC) of the intelligence wing of the Punjab police on Tuesday arrested a retired armyman for allegedly spying for Pakistan intelligence agencies.

The state special operations cell (SSOC) of the intelligence wing of the Punjab police on Tuesday arrested a retired armyman for allegedly spying for Pakistan intelligence agencies.

The accused has been identified as Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Dayalgarh in Sangrur district. The cell has also recovered photographs of vital installations, details of army vehicles' movements, handmade maps of restricted areas, photocopies of army's restricted training manuals and information regarding the army's attacking formations.

SSOC official Nirmal Singh said Sukhwinder was arrested by a team led by inspectors Harvinderpal Singh and Balbir Singh from the Bhawanigarh area following a tip-off.

A case under Sections 3, 4, 5 and 9 of the Official Secrets Act and 120-B of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused at the SSOC police station in Amritsar.

Preliminary inquiries reveal that the accused retired from the 21 Sikh Light Infantry in 2005. He was presently working as a security guard at a private warehouse in Channo village of Sangrur district.

He was allegedly recruited by a Pakistani intelligence official and was being paid for his assignments. SSOC officials said the accused operated under the code name of "Sharma ji".

The accused was produced before in the court of additional chief judicial magistrate BS Romania, who sent him to a six-day judicial remand.
