Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) (north) Raj Kumar Jalhotra said they zeroed in on the accused as he had been changing his statement frequently. The case was registered on a complaint by Vipan Kumar, the factory-owner, who alleged that Prasad had been robbed of Rs 30,000 while he was returning to the factory after withdrawing the money from two banks.

On suspecting his involvement, Police claimed that they interrogated Prasad, who confessed to the crime. Police have recovered Rs 20,000 from his possession. Earlier, following Kumar's complaint, police had swung into action and initiated an investigation. In his statement, Prasad had said that he had used cheques to withdraw Rs 11,000 from a Punjab National Bank branch and Rs 19,000 from a branch of Oriental Bank of Commerce. On reaching Shivpuri Chowk, Prasad had claimed, four men forced him into a car, snatched the Rs 30,000 from him, and threw him out of the vehicle near Ladhowal.
